March 20, 2019 - Doctor's UCR Graduation Party 6 - 8 PM

9. Endurance: A Year in Space, A Lifetime of Discovery (non-fiction) by Scott Kelly – Friday, November 16 - We will be meeting at the Club House at 5:30 PM
The veteran of four spaceflights and the American record holder for consecutive days spent in space, Scott Kelly has experienced things very few have. Now, he takes us inside a sphere utterly hostile to human life. He describes navigating the extreme challenge of long-term spaceflight, both life-threatening and mundane: the devastating effects on the body; the isolation from everyone he loves and the comforts of Earth; the catastrophic risks of colliding with space junk; and the still more haunting threat of being unable to help should tragedy strike at home--an agonizing situation Kelly faced when his twin brother's wife, American Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, was shot while he still had two months in space.
Kelly's humanity, compassion, humor, and determination resonate throughout, as he recalls his rough-and-tumble New Jersey childhood and the youthful inspiration that sparked his astounding career, and as he makes clear his belief that Mars will be the next step in spaceflight. In the book Endurance, we see the triumph of the human imagination, the strength of the human will, and the infinite wonder of the galaxy.

PARIS IN LOVE by Eloisa James In 2009, New York Times bestselling author Eloisa James took a leap that many people dream about: she sold her house, took a sabbatical from her job as a Shakespeare professor, and moved her family to Paris. Paris in Love: A Memoir chronicles her joyful year in one of the most beautiful cities in the world.
With no classes to teach, no committee meetings to attend, no lawn to mow or cars to park, Eloisa revels in the ordinary pleasures of life—discovering corner museums that tourists overlook, chronicling Frenchwomen’s sartorial triumphs, walking from one end of Paris to another. She copes with her Italian husband’s notions of quality time; her two hilarious children, ages eleven and fifteen, as they navigate schools—not to mention puberty—in a foreign language; and her mother-in-law Marina’s raised eyebrow in the kitchen (even as Marina overfeeds Milo, the family dog).
Paris in Love invites the reader into the life of a most enchanting family, framed by la ville de l’amour.
NOTE: Locations can change depending upon if a member would like to host a book club session at their home.
All Saturdays are at 9:00 am at Coco's - University & Iowa UNLESS otherwise noted above.

#3 Upstairs at the White House by J.B. West. The summary is below.
We will be having a potluck at Robbie Kennedy's home on Friday, May 12th at 5:30 pm
New York Times bestseller: A fascinating behind-the-scenes look at life on Pennsylvania Avenue with America’s first families, by the man who spent nearly three decades in their midst
J. B. West, chief usher of the White House, directed the operations and maintenance of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue—and coordinated its daily life—at the request of the president and his family. He directed state functions; planned parties, weddings and funerals, gardens and playgrounds, and extensive renovations; and, with a large staff, supervised every activity in the presidential home. For twenty-eight years, first as assistant to the chief usher, then as chief usher, he witnessed national crises and triumphs, and interacted daily with six consecutive presidents and first ladies, as well as their parents, children and grandchildren, and house guests—including friends, relatives, and heads of state.
J. B. West, whom Jackie Kennedy called “one of the most extraordinary men I have ever met,” provides an absorbing, one-of-a-kind history of life among the first ladies. Alive with anecdotes ranging from Eleanor Roosevelt’s fascinating political strategies to Jackie Kennedy’s tragic loss and the personal struggles of Pat Nixon, Upstairs at the White House is a rich account of a slice of American history that usually remains behind closed doors.
Hope you can join us,
Teri

2017 Committee Meetings
Wednesday, March 15th Home Life Committee at 5:30 pm at the Club House. It has been awhile since we have had a meeting of our Home Life Committee. This is an interesting committee because there are so many possible projects that fall under its umbrella. Some of the possibilities are guide dogs, foster care, Habitat for Humanity, homeless shelters, Ronald McDonald House, Toys for Tots, Meals on Wheels, Senior programs, Cancer programs, Women Out Walking and many other health related issues.
It should be very exciting to pick the programs that we would like to start working with. I have set our first meeting for March 15th at 5:30 pm at the club house. If you are able to come please let me know. Even if you can show up at the last minute, that will be great.

March 11, 2017 - 2017 Breakfast Book Club
Here are the books you have selected with the dates/times/location and the order of the books:
All Saturdays are at 9:00 am at Coco's - University & Iowa.
#2 The Woman in Cabin 10 - by Ruth Ware - Saturday, March 11th
To provide enough notice for everyone to read this exciting mystery bestseller, the next Breakfast Book Club meeting will be Saturday, March 11th at 9:00. The book selection is: The Woman In Cabin 10 by Ruth Ware. The summary is below:
In this tightly wound, enthralling story reminiscent of Agatha Christie’s works, Lo Blacklock, a journalist who writes for a travel magazine, has just been given the assignment of a lifetime: a week on a luxury cruise with only a handful of cabins. The sky is clear, the waters calm, and the veneered, select guests jovial as the exclusive cruise ship, the Aurora, begins her voyage in the picturesque North Sea. At first, Lo’s stay is nothing but pleasant: the cabins are plush, the dinner parties are sparkling, and the guests are elegant. But as the week wears on, frigid winds whip the deck, gray skies fall, and Lo witnesses what she can only describe as a dark and terrifying nightmare: a woman being thrown overboard. The problem? All passengers remain accounted for—and so, the ship sails on as if nothing has happened, despite Lo’s desperate attempts to convey that something (or someone) has gone terribly, terribly wrong…
With surprising twists, spine-tingling turns, and a setting that proves as uncomfortably claustrophobic as it is eerily beautiful, Ruth Ware offers up another taut and intense read in The Woman in Cabin 10—one that will leave even the most sure-footed reader restlessly uneasy long after the last page is turned.
Looking forward to seeing many of you at this next Breakfast Book Club.
