Dear members,
We just wanted to let you know that our 911 dispatchers committee assembled the bags for the 50 dispatchers and delivered them to the police station that they work out of. We had a great time and were given a tour of the facilities, which was very interesting. Our committee spent a lot of time gathering and assembling the items for these bags. We want to thank all our members who helped provide the items for these bags. If you could please respond and let me know how much money you spent and how much time it took, it will help Teri and I write the report for this wonderful project. We are so proud of how our members come through for us.

Pete Jacobs Wartime Radio Revue Tuesday, July 19 at 8pm
Interspersing the hits of the Thirties and Forties with late-breaking news-stories from the war-years and 1940s-style radio commercials, experiencing the show is like time traveling back to a World War II-era U.S.O. performance. And with a trio of harmonizing vocalists giving tribute to The Andrews Sisters, a hot, driving rhythm section, and an eight-piece horn section, Pete Jacobs’ “classic-swing” sound is both full and authentic.

April 12 - April 22, 2022 - Welcoming the Stranger - Refugee Outreach
Dear members,
For those of you who were at this month's business meeting, we learned about the needs of the Afgan refugees who are coming to our country with little more than the clothes on there backs. Our Club is adopting a group that is involved in providing for the many needs of these refugees. Enclosed is a list of some of the many necessary items that are most helpful for them when moving into their new homes.
To keep costs down, you will probably have your best luck shopping at Big Lots, Walmart and even Target. You can bring the items to our next business meeting on April 12th or if you are coming to Wine and Paint night on April 22nd. If you need to have them picked up at your home, you can arrange that for the week of April 18th by contacting Christine Beaulieu at christineanjeff@aol.com or Judith Glenn
at jglenn0111@yahoo.com.
This is a new and really great humanitarian project that our Club is taking on and I hope we will be seeing and/or hearing from many of you next month. I am sending out my personal thanks in advance.

April 1, 2022 thru April 30, 2022 - "Water Project"

At our last meeting, I asked you to replace a drink of coffee, tea, or soda with water and reflect on what your life without clean water to drink might be like. Why? Because I hope you will donate the money you save by drinking water to a new water project this year.
RWC has supported projects done by The Water Project for 8 years. They provide clean reliable water to communities in Africa that suffer from a lack of access to clean and safe water. They partner with the selected community to provide expertise and financial support to make water projects (like hand pumps and wells) a reality. They also follow-up on each project to ensure their functionality on a regular basis. Over the past 8 years, RWC has donated funds to The Water Project helping about 3500 people gain access to water. We have helped with projects to dig wells and install hand pumps, make sand dams and rain catchment tanks, and protect natural springs in Africa.
Why? Because access to water changes the lives of these people in so many ways - improving their health, improves the children's education so hours spent fetching water can now be used for their education, crops don't die if water is available, and more.
Last year, we supported the Gimariani Primary School in Kenya. We donated funds in May 2021 and by September 2021 they has access to safe and clean water thanks to the completion of their rain tank! The Water Project also installed new latrines and handwashing stations for students as well as training students and staff at the school on improved sanitation and hygiene practices, including COVID-19 prevention. Now the students at Gimariani Primary School are able to live healthier lives and focus on their education. They are all smiles as you can see below!
So please consider substituting a glass/bottle of water for coffee, tea, or soda a couple of times and donate the amount those skipped drinks would have cost you. You can bring your donation to the business meeting on 4/12 or send your "savings" donation to RWC by the end of April. If you send a check, note "Water Project" donation and mail it to the clubhouse. If donating via credit card or PayPal, use our RWC website and add the same note: "Water Project". Thanks to those that have already sent in their donations.
I will share some of the current water projects for schools and communities that are in need of funds with the Exec Board so a project can be selected and a check sent to The Water Project.
So here's a drink of water to your health (it's good for me and you and it does even more good for our Water Project recipients)!

Hi ladies,
Wednesday April 6th is National Walking Day. The American Heart Association sponsors this day to remind people about the health benefits of taking a walk. March 19, 2022 - Orientation/Meet and Greet for new and prospective members - 2-4:30 PM

Dear members,
Come join us for our Orientation/Meet and Greet for new and prospective members. The Club has not had this event since the start of the pandemic. Many of you have joined our Club and have been unable to learn about our Club's programs and projects and the numerous volunteer opportunities to serve our community. If you are an experienced member, we encourage you to attend so that you have an opportunity to share why you joined our Club and to mingle with the new and prospective members that are attending.
The National Organization has restructured our programs and we will be sharing exciting information with everyone. The format of this event is informal. It is not lecture based but, rather, an expo style where you can visit booths and talk with our program leaders and ask any questions you may have. You will learn more about what projects may be upcoming and what social events the Membership Committee has planned. Now is the time to invite your family or friends who have expressed interest in our Club.
There will be light refreshments served as well as coffee, water and lemonade.
Please join us on Saturday, March 19th, from 2 to 4:30 pm. We need you to RSVP by Monday, March 7fth, to Georgia Anders-Kutch, Membership Chair, at email gandersk@gmail.com. We need your RSVP so we know how much refreshments to provide.

Hi ladies,
Let’s participate in this easy “Done in a Day” RWC project being coordinated by Katherine Williams. Just look around your home for any or all of the following items to be dropped off on Saturday morning 2/5 between 10 am and noon at the clubhouse. It was planned before our meeting because the vases are needed next week.
1: Vases are needed for Norte Vista High School's Floral Arrangement classes. They are making arrangements for Valentine’s Day. Maybe you have been the recipient of lovely bouquet in the past. How about “paying it forward” by donating that vase?
2: Small Boxes for a Pet Store - small boxes about ½ of a shoe box size to shoe box size. Great way to recycle any small boxes you might have around!
3: Fresh Fruit – Do you have a fruit tree? Can you donation some fresh fruit for individuals in special needs homes? Some will to go the home with the boys and ladies that we previously helped.
4: Items for The Pink Ribbon Thrift Store – Items must be small enough to fit in a shopping bag. NO electronics, furniture, or gym equipment. They benefit our local cancer resource center, The Pink Ribbon Place, which provides counseling, support groups, wigs, and much more. Nice gently-used clothes, jewelry, or unique knick-knacks are some examples of items you might have and don’t use anymore that can be donated.
So take a quick look around your home, start a bag of items to bring, and drive by the clubhouse on Saturday for a quick hello and item drop off. We will be in front of the clubhouse with boxes to take your items so you don't even need to park. If you have items you can't drop off, perhaps you can send them with another member that morning.
If you have any questions, email Katherine Williams at mamabearathome@att.net. If you need to contact us on Saturday, please call or text Lois Bailey at 951-233-7906 (cell).

If you have any questions, email Katherine Williams at mamabearathome@att.net. If you need to contact us on Saturday, please call or text Lois Bailey at 951-233-7906 (cell).

1. One of the ways Hilderbrand brings the 1969 setting to life is by using songs as the chapter titles. How did that choice affect your experience reading the book? Were you familiar with all the songs?
2. Summer of ’69 is told from multiple points of view. Did you have a favorite character? Why? Do you like that format instead of having a single narrator for the book?
3. Summer of ‘69 is also a story of family --- of mothers and children. Compare Kate and Exalta. What is the source of friction between them? What are they like as mothers? How do mother and daughter change as the summer progress.
4. The Nichols-Foley-Levin’s are a “blended family.” Why do you think Kate didn’t let her children refer to each other as half- or step-siblings? Do you think that changed how the siblings related to each other?
5. The differences between each generation of the family were featured in many ways. Why do you think Kate and Blair reacted so differently when they were each faced with their husbands’ infidelity?
6. In some ways, Blair and Kirby represent the split between the traditional gender role for women and the new options that became possible after feminism. In what ways do the sisters learn from each other’s choices? Do you think Jessie will be more like Blair or Kirby when she grows up?
7. “In that moment, what Blair wants more than anything is not to be defined by other people.” Like Blair, was there ever a time in your life when you felt defined by your role more than your individual self? Was that a positive or negative experience for you?
8. What do you think about the ways that different characters take justice into their own hands? Were you satisfied by how Kirby chose to confront Officer Turbo? What about how Suze dealt with Garrison the tennis coach?
9. Throughout the book, Kate feels Tiger was drafted to punish her for a guilty secret. Were you surprised to learn what the secret was? Do you think Kate was right to tell Jessie the secret?
10. How did you envision Tiger’s story ending? How do you think Kate felt about Tiger’s last letter?
Summer of '69 by Elin Hilderbrand is a New York Times Bestseller that we are reading for our November Book Club meeting. This is our last meeting this year. See the summary of Summer of '69 below for more details.
The book (or Kindle edition) is available from Amazon, Thriftbooks, and other places for purchase. It is also available through the Riverside Public Library.

Welcome to the most tumultuous summer of the twentieth century! It's 1969, and for the Levin family, the times they are a-changing. Every year the children have looked forward to spending the summer with their grandmother in Nantucket: but this year Blair, the oldest sister, is marooned in Boston, pregnant with twins and unable to travel.
Middle sister Kirby, a nursing student, is caught up in the thrilling vortex of civil rights protests, a passion which takes her to Martha's Vineyard with her best friend, Mary Jo Kopechne. Only son Tiger is an infantry soldier, recently deployed to Vietnam. Thirteen-year-old Jessie suddenly feels like an only child, marooned in the house with her out-of-touch grandmother who is hiding some secrets of her own. As the summer heats up, Teddy Kennedy sinks a car in Chappaquiddick, a man flies to the moon, and Jessie experiences some sinking and flying herself, as she grows into her own body and mind.

Pink on Parade:
This is Jo Thompson your Arts and Culture Committee Chair and I wanted to let you know that during this first week of the Pink on Parade project I will be posting on my Facebook page several instructional videos about how you can create your own artwork to enter into the contest. Just search Facebook for Jo (no e) Thompson you should find my page.
I will show you how to make use of materials you probably already have at home like sheets of paper markers crayons etc. Also I will demonstrate watercolor painting as well. I will be using the Facebook live video feature and once posted the videos will be accessible 24/7 forever, so you will be able to find them there.
Creating art is a therapeutic and healing practice and in this case our artwork also is an opportunity to be a community fundraiser for a very good cause: breast cancer awareness!
Thank you for your interest in this project and I look forward to seeing beautiful paintings and drawings from our fabulously creative fellow members!
Your friend
Jo
Here's how you can participate as a part of our RWC team raising breast cancer awareness! It's as easy and doesn't cost anything to enter the contests. Enter one, two, or all of three of the contests shown below and/or vote on the entries and/or donate money. Although RWC is focusing on the "Pink Up A Picture" contest (which allows both adult and youth entries), we hope to have club member entries for all 3 contests.
PAINT THE TOWN PINK: Decorate your home or business in pink!
PINK UP A PICTURE: Create a piece of art in any medium of your choice!
P.O.P. TEE DESIGN: Create the next 2-color Pink on Parade t-shirt design!
STEP 1) SELECT a contest and SUBMIT one photo of your creation in JPEG/JPG or PNG format using the "Pink on Parade" link below and then click on the "Contests" button!
STEP 2) In 150 words or less, SHARE what inspired you to participate and raise awareness!
STEP 3) VOTE for your favorite entries every 12 hours starting October 12 – October 26!
Here are a few ideas to get you started or get your "hive buzzing" (entries can be done by groups). Of course, you can come up with other ideas.
Individuals - "Pink up" a hat, a shirt, a purse, or shoes with pink ribbons, glitter, flowers, buttons (you get the idea). Draw or paint a picture with pink. Paint a rock with words like "Hope" or "Fight Cancer" or paint a bunch of rocks with pink ribbons and take a picture of them. Create a bouquet of pink flowers and take a picture of it or paint it. If you are a cancer patient or a survivor, share your experience/feelings through a visual medium. Create fingernail art with pink ribbons on your nails. Your children or grandchildren can make pink ribbons and hearts out of playdough, draw a picture, or create another work of art for the youth contest.
Groups or Bee Hives - Be safe, distance, and wear a mask but work together! Create sidewalk art/inspiring quotes with chalk in your area or at the clubhouse and take a picture of it. Use email, phone calls, video chats to come up with a t-shirt design for next year's walk or plan and decorate part of the clubhouse (like the entry area table or the porch). Create a pink light/cancer display (like a Christmas lights display) to create awareness and take a picture of it.
For more details about the contests and to submit your entry, click on the "Pink on Parade" link below and then click on the "Contests" button. IMPORTANT: Our club's team is Riverside Woman's Club - Women Out Walking. When you submit an entry, be sure to type in our team name in the last box of the online contest entry form designated for team name.
Pink on Parade (click green words to get "Go to" link, then click on blue link to get webpage)
Pink on Parade 2020 JOIN ME from the comfort of your home for this year's Pink on Parade as we raise breast cancer awareness together...
We only have 3 weeks to prepare and submit our entries. The submission deadline is October 9th at 10 pm. Voting is October 12 – October 26 and winners will be announced on October 30th.
You may be wondering where the team part comes in if we are submitting separate entries for our team. Teams can win prizes in the following categories:
1) MOST MONEY RAISED - team raising the most money
2) MOST SPIRITED TEAM - most contest entries
3) MOST CREATIVE TEAM - most creative story of why breast cancer awareness is important to you and your team!
If you don't have time or don't want to create an entry individually or with a group, you can help with community engagement by voting and asking your family and friends to vote for their favorite entries in October.
I am asking RWC to make a donation to Pink Ribbon Place but feel free to donate to Pink Ribbon Place and select our RWC team to help us meet or exceed our fundraising goal. Click on the "Pink on Parade" link above and then click on the "Donate" button.
If you have questions about the contests, email or call Lois. Email or call Jo with artistic questions. Please email your picture to me when you submit it to Pink on Parade. I plan to submit a couple pictures for our newsletter.
