October 23, 2019 - "Reciprocity Tea" 1 -3 PM

Chris Gambino, my Co-Chair and I, want to reach out to you and describe what a Reciprocity Tea is all about for those of you who are a relatively new member. Traditionally, Clubs have these Teas. which are free, to extend friendship and give back to one another for supporting each others events and activities.
Our Tea will a traditional one with a variety of tea sandwiches, scones and four kinds of desserts and a salad. We also will have entertainment. You can bring your own favorite tea cup or you can use one from our "dish closet."
We do have a need for four hostesses. The hostesses will be making sure that the teapots are filled with hot water. We will have a variety of teas for our guests to select from. As a hosting Club, we want to make sure that our guests have everything they need. The food will be served buffet style so they can help themselves to the wonderful array of sandwiches etc
If you can attend, please let Chris or myself know as soon as possible. as well as volunteering for a hostess. You will, of course, be at a table and enjoy the wonderful tea service. You just have to keep an eye on the teapot.
Thanks.
Teri & Chris

Oct. 11, 2019 - Book Club

Friday 10/11/19 Evening 6:00 pm - Erin Synder
"Prodigal Summer" by Barbara Kingsolver
Place: Riverside Woman's Club
Hope some of you can join Erin Synder, our October Book Club Leader, on Friday October 11th at 6:00 pm at the clubhouse for our next and last Book Club meeting and potluck for this year!
The book she selected is: "Prodigal Summer" by Barbara Kingsolver. It is available on Kindle as an e-book or a paperback on Amazon, eBay, and other sources. You can also borrow it from the public library (1 book is available). Here’s a short review of the book:
Prodigal Summer weaves together three stories of human love within a larger tapestry of lives inhabiting the forested mountains and struggling small farms of southern Appalachia.
From her outpost in an isolated mountain cabin, Deanna Wolfe, a reclusive wildlife biologist, watches a den of coyotes that have recently migrated into the region. She is caught off-guard by a young hunter who invades her most private spaces and confounds her self-assured, solitary life. On a farm several miles down the mountain, Lusa Maluf Landowski, a bookish city girl turned farmer's wife, finds herself unexpectedly marooned in a strange place where she must declare or lose her attachment to the land that has become her own. And a few more miles down the road, a pair of elderly feuding neighbors tend their respective farms and wrangle about God, pesticides, and the possibilities of a future neither of them expected.
Over the course of one humid summer, these characters find their connections to one another and to the flora and fauna with whom they share a place. Prodigal Summer demonstrates a balance of narrative, drama, and ideas that is characteristic of Barbara Kingsolver's finest work.

Leader: Marcia Hull
6:00 PM at the Clubhouse
Hoping you can join Marcia Hull, our June Book Club Leader, on Friday June 14th at 6:00 pm at the clubhouse for our next Book Club meeting and potluck!
The book she selected is: Behold the Dreamers by Imbolo Mbue. It is available on Kindle, through Amazon, and Barnes and Noble as well as other sources. You can also borrow it from the public library.
This is the book that was originally scheduled for the April meeting that was cancelled, so some of you may have already read it. Here’s a short review of the book from Goodreads:
Jende Jonga, a Cameroonian immigrant living in Harlem, has come to the United States to provide a better life for himself, his wife, Neni, and their six-year-old son. In the fall of 2007, Jende can hardly believe his luck when he lands a job as a chauffeur for Clark Edwards, a senior executive at Lehman Brothers. Clark demands punctuality, discretion, and loyalty—and Jende is eager to please. Clark’s wife, Cindy, even offers Neni temporary work at the Edwardses’ summer home in the Hamptons. With these opportunities, Jende and Neni can at last gain a foothold in America and imagine a brighter future.
However, the world of great power and privilege conceals troubling secrets, and soon Jende and Neni notice cracks in their employers’ façades.
When the financial world is rocked by the collapse of Lehman Brothers, the Jongas are desperate to keep Jende’s job—even as their marriage threatens to fall apart. As all four lives are dramatically upended, Jende and Neni are forced to make an impossible choice.

Hello Club Women,
Wow! What a great feeling to know we exceeded our goal because ALL of you supported the Free the Girls Bra Drive. The goal was 1,000 and we collected 1,705 bras! I really hope you take the time to look them up on line. Just put in your search engine Free the Girls. You will be able to read how and why the organization began and stories of women who are now living free from sex trafficking because they can sell the bras. Something we may take for granted can be used to help others. Isn't that great? I know it made you all happy because I saw the smiles on your faces and heard you cheering. Thank you for donating and telling others so the drive was a success.

In September, the Riverside Woman’s Club began collecting bras for their annual project called “Free the Girls.” This is an international organization that helps survivors of sex trafficking return to independence by selling new & gently used bras in their second-hand markets, specifically in Uganda, Mozambique, El Salvador and Costa Rica.
The collection time frame was six weeks and the goal was set for “1000” bras. The project took off and soared through the Club, friends, neighborhood Bra parties, exercise groups, churches, community centers and via social media. The deadline came and with it a celebration for the final count. RWC had exceeded their goal by collecting “1705 bras and their cup runneth over!
RWC would like to personally thank everyone who donated to our cause.

I have chosen as our theme for this administration: Back to the Future…Continuing the Legacy
In 2004 our theme for that administration was A Legacy of Service. In my remarks as the Incoming President I mentioned that the administration was going to be like the movie Back to the Future. And here we are in 2018, Continuing the Legacy, and again we will be traveling Back to the Past to understand our present while planning for the Future.
A legacy is something that has been handed down from an ancestor or predecessor. Our history is a bequest that has been entrusted to us. We have a great history, but too little is still known or acknowledged by our community. It is better than in 2004. We need to take a trip Back to address this issue to bring us into the Future.
The first step is to learn our own heritage. We have a wonderful place to start, our clubhouse. I would like to see our clubhouse listed with the city as a historical landmark of some kind. Those of you that were members in 2004-2010 this sounds familiar, yes it was my emphasis that did not get accomplished. I am asking for your help to make it happen this time.
Emphasis Projects chosen for this administration: Domestic Violence Awareness & Prevention and Advocating for Children, with the special emphasis on Human Trafficking in both areas. I hope we can make an impact for the Future by promoting legislation and public policy now.
For our symbol of this administration: A Clock Face was chosen. We the club are at 12:00 o’clock, we travel clockwise into the Future, counterclockwise Back into the Past, but whichever direction, we will eventually run into the other. Our Future depends on our looking Back.
I hope you are excited about learning more about us, getting our name out in the community and working to Continue our Legacy for Future Generations.
Robbie Kennedy, President

Helping Foster Kids is our President's Special Project. This year, as we did last year, we will be helping with the Foster Kids graduation party through the County. With all the donated gift cards, we were able to put together 3 baskets for three lucky young people!
Attached is a list of suggested baskets that we could put together. If you are inclined to donate a gift card or item for a basket, please bring it to the May meeting, or contact me and I will arrange to pick it up from you! If you want to donate, but can't make it to the May meeting, contact me and I will meet with you.
We need any donated gift cards, etc. by May 31st as we have to put the baskets together and turn them in to the County. Some of the easiest baskets to do are an entertainment basket with gift cards to movies, bowling, fast food places, etc. I think we did two of those last year and also, a kitchen basket.
Some of the members also worked the grad party itself. We cheered the kids as they arrived, helped them register, etc. It was wonderful to see how happy and proud they were to have graduated from high school!
They had a yummy dinner, dancing and music, as well as photos, choosing their gift basket, and hearing an inspirational speaker. We enjoyed it as well.
Anyone who is interested in working the event, just let me know. It is on June 14th, from about 4-9. You can work any time within those hours. It will be at the Grove Community Church on Trautwein and Grove Community Drive off Van Buren Blvd., in Riverside.
Thanks so much. Dulcea and Teri

Please join us at our May 8, 2018 Riverside Woman’s Club monthly meeting.
Our Tuesday, May 8th evening Business Meeting will be a special one, as we will install our new Executive Board for 2018-2020. To make the evening more special, Dulcea and I and the Outgoing Executive Board would like to make the suggestion that we enhance our Federation Time, which starts at 5:00 pm, by requesting members to bring, if they choose, appetizers, and wine or cider. The appetizers could include: fruit, veggies, cheese, crackers, chips, salsa, etc. We will ask McGraths to set up some water.. Later in the evening there will be the usual coffee, water and other beverage and many surprises.
This will be a beautiful evening as we hand over the gravel to our new Administration. Please come and join us for a wonderful ceremony, not to be missed. The menu and e-mail from Robbie will be out shortly.
The meeting is FREE but should you choose to buy a catered meal it is $15 or you can bring your own meal. To reserve a meal for this event contact Robbie Kennedy at RobbKenn1@aol.com or 951-780-3485. Deadline to RSVP for the May meeting meal is May 3, 2018.
For more information contact Teri at (951) 265-2007.
We meet at the Riverside Woman's Clubhouse located at 4092 10th Street (the corner of Brockton and 10th St.) in downtown Riverside. Everyone is welcome!
